I Am Going Bird Hunting in Uruguay—What Do I Bring?

Great question! Those who are afraid to ask are often caught unprepared. Uruguay bird hunting is really no different than bird hunting anywhere else in the world, but unlike other places, one cannot make a quick trip to Wal Mart, or Bass Pro Shops, in the event that an item or two that will be needed for the hunt was overlooked. Whether you have booked a Uruguay dove hunting trip, or if you are going duck hunting in Uruguay, it is important to contact your Uruguay outfitters in advance to ensure that the list of gear and equipment that is needed for the hunt is current and applicable for the time of year that you are going.

Airlines are increasingly upping their extra fees, and overweight baggage fees, so it pays big dividends to do your homework and prepare accordingly. Those who don’t wish they had, and those who do enjoy their Uruguay bird hunting trip thoroughly.

What If I am Duck Hunt and Dove Hunting in Uruguay?

The combo trip is one of the most rewarding, but it also calls for a tad bit more preparation to ensure success—with regard to gear and equipment, that is. The difference in temperature does not vary much between the two hunting locations, but the level of humidity does. Increased humidity means that it “feels like” it is colder than it really is—at least that is the way the weathermen like to describe humidity and wind-chill.

The Cardinal rule is to pack lightly, and try to be sure that each piece of clothing that you pack for Uruguay dove hunting, can also be reused on while dove hunting in Uruguay. This way, you lighten your load significantly, and it will save you a lot of money in extra and/or overweight baggage fees charged by the airlines. All quality Uruguay outfitters offer laundry services, and it makes much more sense to reuse your clothing. Layers make sense, there is no need to bring polar-weight gear to Uruguay, since the temperatures seldom descend below the freezing mark—a really cold day of Uruguay bird hunting would be in the range of 35 degrees F in the morning, and warming up to 45 degrees F.

Short List of Gear for Uruguay Dove Hunting, Uruguay Duck Hunting and Perdiz Hunting in Uruguay:

Duck hunting: waders (as lightweight as possible). NEW UPDATE - many of our redesigned duck hunting blinds do NOT require you to pack those heavy waders. Contact us at Los Gauchos to discuss. Boots and light weight waders are always good to have. No one likes to be cold, wet and miserable while a high volume of ducks are coming into the decoys. Your mind should be on the duck hunting not on your wet seat!

Long undergarments: for use below waders. See above. The months of July and August can be cold in Uruguay, so pack layers and pack for the temperature for your early morning duck hunts.

Baseball cap, and fleece hat. (appropriate for the ambient temperatures)

Gore-Tex or waterproof parka: protects against cold weather and rain at the same time. Get two for the price of one! A quality parka will last for years, and there is no substitute for a good one for duck hunting in Uruguay.

Several pair of insulated thermal socks: an assortment of weights is recommended—for the type of Uruguay bird hunting you are planning on doing (Uruguay dove hunting provides for more walking—therefore a lighter weight—while duck hunting in Uruguay requires sitting still in a blind—requiring a warmer (heavier) weight sock to keep your feet warm)

A good pair of gloves that will not only keep your hands warm, but allows for easy handling of the gun as well. Gloves that are too thick will result in fumbling for the trigger, and missing precious shot opportunities (especially important for duck hunting in Uruguay).
